In the news: Single use plastic ban

At RMF we pride ourselves on our sustainable approach to the environment and as such we are delighted to learn that England is heading towards a ban on single use plastics.

Single-use plastic items including plates, cutlery, balloon sticks and polystyrene cups could all now be phased out in a bid to reduce plastic pollution that plagues our planet.

Thérèse Coffey, the environment secretary, is set to outline plans to phase out the items and replace them with biodegradable alternatives in the coming weeks, the Financial Times reported.

It comes after the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) held a public consultation on a plan to ban the supply of single-use plastic items and polystyrene food and drink containers.

The last similar legislation was passed by the UK government in 2020 and it banned single-use plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds.

A Defra spokesperson said: “We are determined to go further and faster to reduce, reuse, and recycle more of our resources in order to transform our waste industry and deliver on our commitments in the ambitious 25-year environment plan. Cutting our reliance on single-use plastics is crucial.’

At RMF we welcome this ban and we hope it further challenges both behaviour of consumers and positively reduces our reliance on single use plastic.
